Hoeveel? - How much?

Hoeveel? - How much?

An advertisement for a pound of young matured (cheese) at the Dappermarkt in Amsterdam. However, how much cheese do you get for a pound, old indications like pound or ounce are not allowed.
Old measurements were decimalised when the Dutch metric system was introduced in 1820, a cup became 1 litre, a thumb 1 cm (was 2,3-2,8 cm) and an ounce became 100 grams (was 26-32 grams). Also the pound (430-498 gram) stayed, first as 1 kilogram, later it was divided. In 1869 all old names were officially abandoned and replaced by international metric standards.

But ask the butcher for an ounce of ham and you will get 100 grams of ham (or usually a little more). So the question is how much cheese do you get if you ask at the cheese stall for a pound of cheese?

A: 1600 grams (before 1800 a pound often consisted of 16 ounces).
B: 1000 grams
C: 500 grams (five ounce)
D: 454 grams (an English or American pound, rounded to whole grams)

Markets are very atmospheric, as Fraggs said none here, but I always love them at Christmas.

Looking at the English equivalent I'd say 450 grammes.

But on the other hand let me think .... if an ounce became 100 grammes, and there are 16 ounces in a pound, then surely I should get 1600 grammes. The latter is far better value so I'll take it. ;-)))

Driving in Amsterdam... I had 2 ships in a shipyard in R'dam for over one year and chose to live in Amsterdam and do the two ways everyday. It took me weeks not to loose myself finding Prinsengracht and my place!

Sounds too complicated for me! It's a good thing the US hasn't converted to metric at least for me that is. lol
