San Rafael River

San Rafael River
Looking east from the Wedge Overlook, San Rafael Swell, Utah. This is sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the San Rafael, for reasons that probably are obvious ;)

Gudrun, Roger (Grisly), Smiley Derleth, Don Barrett (aka DBs travels) and 4 other people have particularly liked this photo

Spectacular scenery, Steve. Reminds me of the eastern Washington scablands.

Indeed. When we first visited the Scablands (Frenchman Coulee near Vantage), I thought how much the area looked like the plateau country of Utah--except all done in black! ;)

Thanks, everyone! This is another little-known area--altho, since I was last there in the early 90s, there are now official overlook points with interpretive signs! But there was just one other party when I was there this time.

Every time I've been through that area it has been on the end of a period of traveling. Now I see what I'm missing, will have to go back with a focus on exploring there.

Thanks, everyone! Don, it's Moab without the crowds--but the roads are all dirt ;) Amazing how that filters out the throngs--

Amazing landscape, Is it sandstone?

Thanks! Yes, it's all sandstone--one of the Mesozoic units on the Colorado Plateau, but I forget which one offhand.
