A primrose! Thanks, Pam. On further checking at the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center, it appears it may be Oenothera caespitosa, which blooms June-July and likes arid conditions.

Thanks! Well, one thing about a desert is that there's lots of sunlight for photosynthesis... Like so many desert wildflowers, I suspect it's taken advantage of a recent rain, and probably had dried up and blown away a couple of weeks later!
