Smiles, and a scratched out face.

Smiles, and a scratched out face.
Uploaded for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "School Days".
I've had an incredibly busy summer, and have missed several themes. (Darn!) Anyway, I've just renewed my membership and hope to get back on track. (Although I'm daunted by the "Tools" theme.)
This photo was very kindly given to me by a library patron who was clearing out her mom's things after she had passed away. She also gave me some other cool photos and an album.
Interesting to see an integrated classroom. I don't have any other vintage photos that show this.

Fantastic! I noticed the integrated classroom too, although there's some minor segregation going on in the seating charts. The crossed-out face reminds me of my elementary school yearbook. At the time, I blacked out a photo of the custodian, and only now as an adult have I figured out why. He was creepy: inappropriate touching, nothing blatant for that time period, but judging by today's standards, he'd be on a sex offender registry, I have no doubt.I wonder what offense caused the face-crossing out here...

Haha. I know just what you mean about "editing"- although yours sounds entirely appropriate!
My 8th grade yearbook has many "altered"photographs, including devil horns, blacked out teeth, droopy, scraggily hair, etc. When I look at them, I can still remember the dislike I held for them, too. *guilt*

Super photo. What a diverse class. Rather amazing for the period I would think. We noticed your absence and there had been some discussion about possible repercussions but cooler heads prevailed. :) Hope your summer was packed with good busy stuff.

A fascinating photo! I wonder if this is just one class--there are over 30 students plus the teachers (and maybe a couple of students) standing in the back.

Thanks, Rick and Alan. I suppose that this diversity was less unusual in northern cities - but it's not what we usually think about classrooms at that time (In this case, the 1940s, I think.)
When we moved here in 1964, bussing had just been ordered in New Haven, CT in order to integrate classrooms. Of course, I was fairly clueless as a ten year old, but I do remember white tension and some of the racist comments - including, shamefully, from teachers.
I do think this is one class, Alan. I think that was not an unusual number, in those days.
