Gosport Station Remembered - 15 September 1987
The intentional use of b&w might make this photograph seem older than it is but the date of 15 September 1987 is correct. The humble Gosport peninsula had once had quite a network of railways including the Fareham to Gosport branch but these started to contract very early with Lee on the Solent station, for example, closing as long ago as 1935.
The once magnificent Gosport station closed to passengers in 1953 and to goods in 1969 but, as a Grade II listed building, remained in place. This picture, then, was taken 18 years after closure and it would not be until about 2009 that development of the site began. A residential development incorporating sympathetically the station remains opened in 2011. The new addresses are 1-17 The Old Railway on the south side and 1-12 Locke Terrace on the north side. These may be found along Spring Garden Lane.
