Thank you Mariano, Luc, Jaap, Rosea, Xata, @ngelique, and Annemarie! It was also very emotional for me and became more so when while I was taking these documentary photos, I learned that an aunt of mine, whom I was close to, had just died from COVID-19. If it's any solace, I heard her final moments were peaceful. Stay safe and stay well everyone!

I agree there are signs of hope and there will always be hope no matter how dark it may get. As Romans 12:12 says: "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation..." for based on Proverbs 23:18: "Surely there is a future and your hope will not be cut off." And for those of us of Faith, also per Romans 12:12: "[B]e constant in prayer."

Great series William, well done. I especially liked the one of the two dogs. It is extremely difficult for them to understand that they cannot meet close up with their friends, on the dog walk. My dog is very sociable, he gets quite upset when restrained lol. He wants to greet his friends.
The problem arises when an owner does not have their dog on a lead, and they have to come right up close to you to get their dog back. I do quietly put them right ;-)
Hope you are keeping well.....

A Beautiful documentary, William. I applaud your optimism but I'm inclined to be sceptic about this desired/hoped for improvement. As it is, people are queuing to give up even more civil and intellectual (not to mention emotional) liberties than ever. We need to watch this situation like hawks.

Sadly I must agree Katja. This will undoubtedly be the Great Depression of our generation. Habits and behaviors will also be transformed for years to come meaning less dining out, less up-close personal interaction, etc. Nevertheless, health and life have paramount value and take precedence over any plans for rushed re-openings.

Taormina club has replied to William Sutherland club
Where I live, in Germany, people cry out for their old life.
They want to go out into nature,
they want their sport and they want no more restrictions.
One tries to remove restrictions by sending a lawyer.
They want to relax so that they can go out for ice cream,
and they want to make exceptions so that thousands can
enjoy themselves in amusement parks.

I notice (due to my work) that people get depressed
and can't cope with this isolation and "staying at home".

When you read all the comments,
you get the impression that most of them are only interested in
removing these restrictions and everything is back to the way it was before.
But that will not be so.
When should the children go to school and how should the lessons look like?
If Mercedes or VW produces again, who will buy then still?
The market will change and even big companies will keep their money together.
Does anyone really believe that in summer you will just get on a plane and go on holiday? Who will go on holiday at all?

Let's just take the German population, who will not be going on holiday this year.
What will the tourism industry do then? And that was just one example,
because the Chinese ... and and and...
how is the little ice cream parlour in Venice supposed to survive?
The hotel, which is so beautifully situated by the sea.
Nobody will come... and if not the fear of the virus is the reason,
then the reason is that the money just isn't there anymore, because more
and more companies are doing short-time work and this is reflected in the wages.

Maybe windy businessmen will also find a way to lie on the beach
separated by acrylic walls and I am already thinking about
how to prevent the stripes from the sun when I go sunbathing with a mask on.

But I see the positive ... because maybe we will learn something from it.

Together... into a safe and healthy future. ... All the best to you William

Katja,

The same holds true here in the USA and NY. People are clamoring for a return to normalcy, and end to shutdowns, lockdowns, social isolation and social distancing. People want to return to work too. While part of NY and the USA may be safe for some sort of relaxation, the NYC metro area is definitely NOT!

At the same time, such demands for a return to normalcy that you correct assert, no one can define, is on the brink of causing violence here in the USA as some recklessly call for defiance, disobedience and even insurrection.

Perhaps to make things easier for people to enjoy the outdoors, a face mask/face covering requirement could be enacted in all places. That way people can go freely outdoors to enjoy the seasons without concern of being infected or infecting others. Considering the rise in new hospitalizations has fallen sharply in the NYC metro area during the first two days the face mask/face covering requirement has been in place, it is worth emulating everywhere. Contrary to what officials had said before, face masks do protect! (something I've been saying before NY even had its first case).

Of course, like you said, a return to the normal of past will never be possible. The new normal may consist of food servers in restaurants wearing face masks, fewer tables spread further apart, re-prioritization of things of importance, a decline of some sorts with sports, film, music and other cultural events, mandated vaccines despite religious or other objections, transformation of beaches as you suggest, the permanence of plastic/glass barriers in shops, etc. As the world was forever changed after 9/11 it will also be forever changed in the post COVID-19 era.

As for cars, we'll have to see. I imagine there will have to be some kind of incentive program. We'll see when my wife's car lease is up in May to see what they offer!

Also as the full impact of 9/11 did not become readily known until years and more than a decade after, sadly the same will be true with this pandemic measured in depression, nightmares, suicides, lowered standards of life for individuals and countries, etc. :(

Still, you're right to also see positive. Air pollution is markedly lower, a greater value may again be placed on life as we've been reminded it is too short, guaranteed to no one and far too precious. I do hope we do learn from this and past mistakes can be avoided in the future. And as a charity wrote, "Social distancing doesn't mean you're in this alone." We're all in this together regardless of borders and together we will get through this. Keep the hope. Stay safe and best wishes too for a healthy as well as happy and prosperous future! All the best to you too Katja.

Raingirl,

It's not that easy for me since I'm an essential worker and cannot stay home. Because of this, I take my camera with me many times since it's important to document this pandemic since despite an uncomfortably high number of deniers in the USA, it's both very real and very deadly. New York clearly illustrates this. Also, whenever I'm outdoors, I socially distance myself from others, wear latex-free gloves and an N-95 face mask.

To quote Jerome Delay, a photographer who is documenting the pandemic in South Africa, "there's no escaping it" since as is the case with his community, COVID-19 is everywhere in the NYC metro area.
www.theguardian.com/global-development/2020/apr/13/photographing-povertys-pandemic-its-a-different-beast-in-south-africa

Thus since I'm already required to work and cannot stay home, I might as well carry my camera to take documentary shots.

Thank you Rosalyn, Roger, and John! Sadly it appears US President Trump is in denial trying to claim COVID-19 deaths are overstated -- they are in fact understated despite accounting for probable cause of death. His only concern appears to open the economy rather than combatting the pandemic. :(

Great report of a shocking reality, William! The aftermath will leave deep wounds in mankind. Beyond the direct victims of covid-19, there are and there will be a lot more collateral victims: those who lost their income source and are facing the threat of starvation; those who suffer of chronic diseases, requiring regular medical and hospital care and, being so afraid of covid-19 in medical environments, refuse assistance to their diseases and die of them in a larger extent than in normal periods! Unlimited fear is a bad counselor and we must carry on with no panic, but with great caution and high alert minds, turning off the automatic pilot in all our routines.
Keep your health and strength of mind, William!
