Woodman, Woodman Spare That Tree

What accidently may have been one of the first environment songs “Woodman, Woodman Spare That Tree” (Irving Berlin – Vincent Bryan) was recorded by Bob Roberts in 1911 and peaked at number two on the charts of the day. The song was based on an 1830 poem by George Pope Morris.

Vaudevillian Bert Williams scored with “Woodman, Woodman Spare That Tree” in 1913 when it again reached number two. During a show in Detroit Bert fainted on stage and said “that’s a nice way to die. They was laughing when I made my last exit”. He died within a week.
