Puttin' on the Ritz
Dancer, pianist, entertainer, singer, actor, comedian, songwriter, bandleader, and night club performer Harry Richman (Reichman) recorded "Puttin' on the Ritz" (Irving Berlin) in 1929. Harry starred in the movie of the same name the next year. This vaudeville piano player was also an airplane altitude and distance world record holder. Harry's 1966 autobiography is titled "A Hell of a Life". According to The "Complete Lyrics of Irving Berlin", this was the first song in film to be sung by an interracial ensemble.
The song is associated with the consummate entertainer, the talented Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Fred Astaire (Austerlitz) when he sang and danced to an elaborate execution of "Puttin' on the Ritz" in the 1946 motion picture "Blue Skies". The song featuring the Jan Garber Orchestra reached the top ten almost everywhere.
The Dutch singer Taco (Ockerse) released the album "After Eight" on which you'll find the top ten single. The year was 1983 and 95 year old Irving Berlin became the oldest living songwriter to have one of his compositions enter the top ten. This version is one of many versions released by RCA and Taco.
This is not titled "Put It On The Ritz" because that would make it a commercial for crackers.
