A reflection perhaps of the poverty of Spain for most of its history, George!
In any event, I would say that the majority of provincial churches are plainly decorated. Mostly they avoided the craze for rococo over-adornment that swept through much of Catholic Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries (I'm plased to say!).
