This does sort of give one a lift!

This does sort of give one a lift!
A side street near me and Otis' factory in Madrid (Otis seem to have the near monopoly of lifts here). I point out to my students that it is a good old Cornish surname and they look confused, assuming it is an 'American' name! (It's true that the company founder made his name in the US but he was from Cornwall) --- citation needed

This must be the company who installed the lift in the last place I worked. I remember them saying it was a Spanish firm....it did keep breaking down unfortunately.

It's an American firm and and worldwide, Rosa. I read somewhere about the lift liberating the development of the skycraper movement at the end iof the 19th century in America. Otis was there at the beginning. The founder obviously had Cornish roots as Otis is as Cornish a surname as they come!

Yes Otis isn't a Cornish name that's true, but it's one for the home team if he put his name to this company, I've ridden in several Otis lifts in my life.

Sorry, Jenny but Otis IS most definietly a Cornish name. The founder of the company was of Cornish origin.
I quote; "The surname Otis was first found in Cornwall where they held a family seat from early times and their first records appeared on the census rolls". From a 'trace your family name' website but I have lost the details.
