19 Crimes

19 Crimes
"Each declared by His Majesty to be punishable on conviction by Transportation"

So, these fellows were on their way to Australia. Let's have a toast to them! The name and the labels are kind of an odd marketing strategy.

Andy Rodker, tiabunna, Pam J, Marco F. Delminho and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

Very strange! Perhaps a very dry, deep red Zinfandel from California would suit these men!

We had some of this wine here - good Aussie shiraz. Strong wine following strong men, usually transported for relatively minor crimes to establish the colony.

Yes, I read Fatal Shore a few years ago. An enormous number of them were teenagers or younger, and people who had done petty things like stealing an apple at the market. (Well, they were half starved, why wouldn't they?) Very cruel times, but they certainly made something of themselves!

One thing about Fatal Shore was that it played on the extreme penalties given to those who fell foul of the system. For most, the usual sequence was that they were passed out as indentured labour to land-owners or businesses and, if they behaved, were made free citizens at the end of their sentence.

It was discussed, but yes, briefly in comparison to the more gruesome treatments.
