Winema Elevators

Winema Elevators
Worden, Oregon. It's not really a town, just this, a couple of farm offices, gas station and a truck stop cafe. I don't think the cafe is still in business. It used to have my dad's favorite breakfast - biscuits and gravy, with a side of sausage.

kiiti, Berny, StoneRoad2013, Keith Burton and 2 other people have particularly liked this photo

I think this is quite an elegant looking structure.............it looks lovely in the sunshine! The vehicles in the shot give a good sense of scale!

Thanks, Keith. That is the way I see them, too, Keith. I've always been kind of awe-struck by these silos and would to have a tour. I wonder what that tower on the left is for.

To answer your question.
The tower* at the left houses the elevator that gets the incoming grain from the "ground" to the level of the top of the silos. There it is discharged onto the conveyor that takes it to the storage silos. By the way, the dust is removed and stored as well - it is the dust which can explode ...
(Grain is discharged from the bottom of the silos)
(A modern facility will monitor and record temperature and humidity levels constantly.)
(*that same tower will also house the power plant and drive motors / gear boxes for the handling systems).

**And the systems that gets the grain out of ships ...

Wow, thank you so much! This is the first time I've understood what "elevator" meant in this context and that it is not synonymous with silo. I just thought it meant "something up high." I think I even have a photo of the aftermath of one that exploded...let's see...here: www.ipernity.com/doc/1227338/47341752/in/album/871566 but I'm not sure. It doesn't make sense to me that it exploded in one spot and then stopped. Or, does only the elevator explode?

I see more of the short, wide metal bin-types (today's upload). They seem to be newer than these monsters - but, what do I know?
