One-room school

One-room school
South Dakota prairie, about 1932. My mother, Mary, is second from left, middle row. She has the same big smile (see PiP). The ghost-baby in front belongs to the teacher. Taken with an obviously shaky Brownie camera.

I don't know where the boys are, maybe there weren't any that year. I'll ask my mother.

Larry He's So Fine, Steve Bucknell, Andy Rodker, and 9 other people have particularly liked this photo

I LOVE these memories so much!
They're precious!
..... about the missing boys in the photo: perhaps in 1930s there weren't mixed classes, were there?
This remark may look silly;-) BUT here in Italy I don' think there were at those times.I must find out!! :-)
ciao Diane!

Certainly mixed schools weren't common after the age of 7, in England, at least wherever I was at school - and it was the state system, not private.

Grazie, Bea. Oh yes, definitely mixed, except for private Catholic schools. This is WAY out in the prairie and most of the schools were only one room serving families for many miles around. A vast landscape, which the kids had to travel on horses or in a horse-drawn buggy driven by an older kid.

All were mixed here, with the exception of Catholic schools. I believe there are also some fundamentalist Protestant ones that separate (Amish?) but I don't exactly keep up with those things. I don't think separating the sexes has been a common thing in the US, in general. Building separate accommodations would have been impractical way out there in ranchland, anyway.

Looks like they have made a snowbaby and are very proud of the result.

I tried to see if I could pick her out based on the inset picture before I read the caption ... and yeah. That smile never changed.

I used to have some school class photos displayed at public level. One day I noticed that as a group they were my most viewed photos and that the identifiable viewers were middle-aged men with a risque/off-colour images in their public display. I found this sickening. I then changed them all to private.

Diane Putnam club has replied to GrahamH club
That is sickening! I suppose that happens everywhere, but I'm not so concerned about it that I will take them down.
