House with lawnmower

House with lawnmower
A home abandoned in 2001 due to asbestos contamination in the soil. This area was a WWII Marine hospital and rehab base and when the barracks were demolished, the asbestos in roofing material was transferred to the soil. Months later, a group of independent scientists analyzed the soil and found a trace - about the same as found in ordinary soil. A few residents stayed and there has never been a report of medical problems caused by asbestos.

Takes 30 - 40 years from exposure for it to kill you. My brother's father-in-law died from it from renovating a house as a young man.

I would imagine that thousands have died from it and no one even knew what caused it. Asbestos used to be everywhere, same with lead.

I haven't been to this site lately. The house is probably in bad shape by now. This photo is from a few years ago.
