Courtesy of Sears mail-order, probably. Nice shot.

Too bad that many don't realize how much of this sort of style was mail order from Sears -- I was surprised, myself, when I learned that many of the classic Victorians in SF were based on mail order materials.

It is pretty amazing, isn't it? Of all the things to order by mail, that took the most courage!

I've often wondered how that worked. Somehow I don't imagine a postal worker dragging a house behind them!

I suppose they arrived by train...wouldn't you think? Yeah, they'd be over the UPS weight limit, huh?

Yes, indeed. I wish the pillars were still there, I'm curious about how they looked. On the other hand, maybe there weren't any!

The conversation up-line here just shows why the long decline of Sears is so sad. They weren't always just an anchor store in a mall. They were part of life in America in a way Amazon, at it's richest and most giddy, can't even dream.

I love the photo, Diane.

Smiley, you are SO right! My mother's family lived on the S. Dakota prairie and the only way they could get some things was through the Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs. They were the "paper mall" of the Depression, especially. Thank you!
