When I lived in Florida, public spaces were always kept beautiful by the Staff of the Parks & Recreation Dept ...... noticed one day, that among the flowers - veggies were planted. Anyone could harvest when they were ripe -- thought it was such a touching way to help those who couldn't afford fresh veggies for their family.
But, the newspaper did an article about it --- said that anybody was welcome to pick the veggies~!

Well, we have to wait !

I love the whole idea of this.

Helping to feed those in need.... work done by those given a second chance to regain some respect and self respect.

I drove over there this evening (see uploads) and they have changed their sign. Now, no mention of the jail crew or master gardeners (whoever they are).

Thats a shame... hope it doesnt mean they want to hide a seemingly good thing.

Master Gardener .....was going to comment last time.. its an outreach course.. Programme is a volunteer training program conducted by University Extension designed to help county extension centers meet the demands for consumer horticulture information.

Many Uni's do the course. This is the better than me explanation !(I cribbed the first few sentences !)

Thanks for the Master Gardener info, Pam. Maybe they had some trouble with the jail crew, who knows. Or, because the county jail keeps losing parts of its budget, maybe they just don't have the sheriff's deputies to spare to oversee the work crews.
