HA!!! Well, I'm sure it was worth it, Gudrun! I agree, it is a magnificent place, yet still very much on an intimate human scale. Very important quality in a public space. I would love to go back.

That's why it's so perfect- because the scale is just right! We were there during the palio but it was so crowded we preferred to watch on TV just like most locals;-)

The Palio seemed to be "in the air" even though it happened a couple of months before I was there. I've seen pictures of the crowd and it looks overwhelming!
