Siena. I don't know what these small bridges between houses are really called! I also don't know whether they are for communal use, or do they connect two sides of the same family dwelling?

I've always assumed that there were walkways for the comparatively wealthy that dated back to when the streets were overflowing with human activity, animal stench, and possibly even flowing sewage.

That's a good assumption and I've never thought of that. I did learn that there was a private, covered passage from the Uffizi Gallery to the Ponte Vecchio. That belonged to the Medici family, so no wonder!
