The Big Pit

The Big Pit
Near the end of our South Wales Govilon trip we paid a visit to the National Coal Museum at Blaenavon, the heart of which, was the pit itself. It was a working coal mine from 1880 to 1980 and opened to the public in 1983. It is one of the few mines that one can travel down the 89m (293ft) shaft to the tunnels below and experience what it may have been like for those, men, women, boys and horses. Unfortunately, for safety reasons neither camera’s not phones were allowed down there. Manned now by very enthusiastic x-miners, we were serenaded down by splendid Welsh choral harmonies. On returning to the surface, heavy rain had set in. My photograph shows a view of the pit itself as it has always been but the surrounding background buildings are far removed from what they were a century ago. The Pip shows the shaft winding house, now run by electricity but in the old days, steam would have been king here. In 1923, 1399 men were employed here.

I love the ethereal effect of the mist in the background, Herb. THE colour of the pit buildings is very eye catching. All the best, Joe.

Thanks Joe. I suspect that this would have all been a grimy black in the good old days.

Imagine being a miner ~ what a life it must have been! But it got food on the table

Life was very different in those days. People nowadays can't imagine the toil that the common folk had to go through in order to provide shelter and put something in the belly of the family.

Excellent capture Herb.
I only went down a working coal mine once back in the 60s & the conditions there made me glad I hadn't followed my father & grandfather down the pit! Having said that I have been thinking about visiting the Big Pit museum for years. Must do it.

We were only down for perhaps one hour but it was enough to want to see light again. This mine had many boys and young women working down here to open air-vent doors and manhandle the coal trucks. Very hard and dangerous work indeed. You did right not to follow your father but you still have a love for the old ways, ie steam. Yes-well worth a visit. The nearby big iron works was closed on our visit but that would have been good to walk around too. We had a snack in the old miners canteen, next to the big shower block.

A fascinating shot and narrative Herb. You've captured the buildings and structures very well, though as you say, they're looking a lot cleaner than they would have done back in the day. A lovely capture in the PiP as well.

Thanks for including the link as well............I've had a quick read through, but I've bookmarked it for a more leisurely read later.

It was all quite here really and the heavy rain did not help, but inside was a hub of activity. A place well worth of the £5 car-park fee that allowed you to go down into the nice too. My pleasure to provide both mine and Wiki's descriptions here.

A great Image of this pit Herb it's a pity the winding house is run by electricity insted of steam bet it was a great experience going down.

Al long as it worked safety I cared little as we swiftly dropped down and then was heaved up later. However it would have been nice to see and feel the big steam engine and belts going too. Yes, a fine experience but I have been down another one, further north than here many years ago too. In Krakow, Poland we went down a deep salt mine is a very large miners cage.

All the best. Herb

A great industrial image Herb times change 50 years ago who would have considered a pit being something to conserve

You have a real point there Peter. I am not old enough to remember real working pits nearby but there were still a lot going on when I was young and I remember the great miners strike. A last ditch here and poyniant reminders of the hardships involved in mining.

A lot of rain in these parts. A great place to visit and very very cheap too with just the car-parking fee to pay. There were several places we did not get to but we may well visit again some time.

That singing was a real surprise and pleasure. It did not seem to be 'for the tourist' but from the hearts! Hope you get to see the museum in Radstock.

Hi Herb
A wonderful and interesting picture, which I like very much!
Very nice composition.
I was here many years ago, and the background does look a little different.
The 'contraband' rules are unchanged though! Anything which could make a spark or fire is not allowed. That includes Kit-Kat wrappers! Same rules apply to oil refineries.
Best Wishes, a nice week ahead, and stay safe!!

Hi Peter and very pleased to have shared this visit with you. Yes, I could well understand the reasoning behind the 'contraband' rule and it did not ruin the visit for us.

Cheers and sorry for this delayed reply. Herb

Schitterende opname en pip met zeer interessante details.
Mooi dat in Wales noch mijnen zijn open gehouden om te bezoeken. In Nederland zijn alle Steenkolenmijnen gesloopt. Frans
