Three Cornered Leek

Three Cornered Leek
Three-cornered leek (Allium triquetrium) goes by many local names, but only one latin one. All the local names refer to its garlicky smell; onion grass, onion weed, wild garlic, three-cornered garlic, three-cornered onion or three-cornered leek. A member of the allium family it originates from the Mediterranean, Madeira, Canary Islands and North Africa. It was introduced to the UK in the 18th century. It has a three-cornered stem. A subtle triangle shape is visible when you horizontally cut a leaf and a clear triangular shape is visible on a cut flower stem.

Is this flower in your garden or in the surrounding countryside? I sometimes see them in my area too.
In any case, you have photographed them very well!
(We fly tomorrow to our daughter who lives on Reunion Island)
Have a nice day*****.

I went for an early evening walk with my daughter and her dog, in Shaftesbury, and that is where I took the photo. I think they are pretty, but spread too easily to have them in my garden.
Have a lovely time with your daughter on the Island Nouchet.
Safe journey and best wishes, Rosa.

A beautiful close-up. Rosa. You have got the depth of field just right, so that the flower stands out well from the blurred background. Cheers, Joe

Very attractive, Rosa. I seem to remember them from my childhood if I don't confuse them with something similar. It's mainly the garlicky smell that I remember, so it must have been them :-)
And I didn't know they were also related to asparagus, I just found out. Well, it's the season plus it's lunchtime...so I'm going to prepare some asparagus now :-))

Thank you very much. There are many with garlic and onion smells that look similar Edna. This one grows taller than many of them, and the whole plant is edible. My eldest daughter's partner likes to forage and this is a favourite ingredient of his.

Enjoy your asparagus. I had white asparagus when on holiday in the Netherlands. It seems to be a favourite there....and very nice too :-))

Thank you, Rosa, I did. I live close to the Baden Asparagus Highway, so eating asparagus during the season is a must. Well, I wouldn't if I didn't like it. Traditionally, white asparagus is grown here, but I often buy green asparagus because no peeling is required...and I'm lazy. Did I mention that before? ;-))

Beautifuly photographed!
They look a bit like white bluebells but the smell gives them away:-)
I remember them from the Channel Island where they would grow with bluebells and red campion but I haven't seen allium triquetum around here in SW Germany.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Gudrun club
Thank you very much Gudrun. They were amongst bluebells, white and blue,
and red campion :-) I haven't noticed very much of it around here, but then when I was visiting my brother yesterday, he had some in his garden! It does spread rather easily though.

This really beautiful Rosa............and a wildflower I've never heard of before. Your main image has spot on focus and depth of field with a gorgeous out-of-focus background. I like the image in the PiP too for the same reasons. Two wonderful captures.

I couldn't resist looking this one up and I discovered that in the UK it is considered an invasive species to the extent it is an offence to plant or otherwise cause to grow this species in the wild. You should probably be glad it's not in your garden!

Thank you very much Keith. I have heard of it but never seen it until now, so it seems like making it an offence to plant has worked well :-) Having said that, when visiting my brother on Monday, he had some in his garden and told me that it spreads very easily, so I don't think I'll be asking for a bulb!
