Die Fliegen sind langgestreckt und meist braun bis schwarz gefärbt. Sie besitzen vier Flügel mit einer deutlichen Aderung,Steinfliegenlarven sind wichtige Indikatoren für sauberes Wasser und dienen Forellen sowie anderen Fischen als Nahrung.Die ausgewachsenen Insekten bleiben in der Nähe bei Gewässern und leben ca 4-6 Wochen,man endeckt sie meist von April bis Juli!
