Newcastle Black Gate (#1184)
My main objective for the few hours I was going to be in Newcastle was to explore around the river, so I wasn’t prepared for how much potentially fascinating history I would encounter on the way. This is the Black Gate of Castle Garth which was near the river. I had no time to explore it, but it’s ancient: “Built between 1247 and 1250 during the reign of King Henry III, The Black Gate was the last addition to the medieval Castle defences...” (a little more on the Castle with next photo.)
