Edinburgh Scott Monument (#1151)
Statue of Sir Walter Scott, at the Scott Monument that dominates the skyline for much of Edinburgh. Probably as a reflection on American education, I know very little about Sir Walter Scott (I never read Ivanhoe). The size and prominence of the monument is described as reflective of the effect that Scott’s writings had on creating a unified sense of Scotish identity.

Anglophone world! He also evidently revived a number of words--for some reason I remember "guise" as one.
