Old Dixie Highway - Espanola (#0446)

Old Dixie Highway - Espanola (#0446)
This photo is chronologically out of sequence – it was taken a day later and at the southern end of the brick segment, in the tiny village of Espanola about 10 miles away from the first photos. There were no such warning signs about the road on the northern segment. (FYI, I didn’t drive the entire segment because I was in a rental car.)

I was raised just a few blocks from Jacksonville’s Old St. Augustine Road, which was probably aligned with what had been a more northern segment of this same road. But, the history of roads wasn’t exactly a common topic in those days, so I had no notion of that road’s history or it’s place in Florida’s development. I only discovered the existence of this stretch when I was planning my travels and happened to notice “Old Dixie Highway” on a map.

It's too bad the state doesn't spruce this road up a little bit, make a more appealing point of interest out of it instead of letting it be buried in dirt and gravel. Put up some informational signs. Oh well, maybe they give it the occasional sweep...

I agree, it's an important part of the history of development. There's actually an 11 mile stretch here through a very rural area that would be ideal for creating a park. Google street view actually shows it -- from Espanola, FL it goes close to straight north (a little leaning west), called variously "Old Dixie Highway" and "Old Brick Road".
