Picolata (#0337)

Picolata (#0337)
You can’t help but find the name interesting…. After Picolata there was Tocoi (no picture) and Riverdale, all classic tiny spots in the road along SR 13.

When I searched on Picolata on the web, it turns out it has a much more interesting history that I’d ever known. There are no signs of it now, but it dates back to the original Spanish settlement of Florida, played a role in the various British settlements, was once a key landing point along the St Johns River for freight and passengers headed to St. Augustine, has had both a fort and a hotel, and was key to Federal (Union) control of St. Augustine in the Civil War. It basically slowly faded after the Civil War and with the introduction of railroads.
