NV-722 Old US 50 (0770)

NV-722 Old US 50 (0770)
NV-722. The route is labeled on maps as 'old US 50' which, per a Wikipedia article, was the first paved version of the Lincoln Highway, constructed in 1924-25. This is also referred to as NV-2, which was the designation given by Nevada to the Lincoln Highway before the US route system was developed. At this point the route fit the description used for US-50 of loneliest road. Though there are ranches along this section, I saw no other traffic for about a half hour.

IIRC, the new alignment of 50 was built in the mid-60s. I remember it was already in place when I was in Austin in the early 70s.
Btw, this is Smith Creek Valley (and playa). Last July there was a landsailing competition here--we heard about it from the folks at the B&B in Kingston, where some of the participants were going to stay. I got a few telephotos of a lone landsailer presumably practicing out on the playa. Judging by my speed on the highway, they were going ~40 mph--pretty fast for such a craft!

Landsailing, at a more leisurely speed, looks interesting. Was it an event with lots of people? There isn't exactly a lot of accommodations or food places out there..

Yeah, landsailing looks interesting, at perhaps a less competitive level.
As I understood it the competition was quite a big deal, so that if you didn't get a place in Austin you camped out or commuted from Fallon. That funky little motel at Middlegate was full!

Of course, it's probably likely to draw people with too large RV's. I can just imagine a stretch of RV's mangling the brush...
