Sand Mountain, NV (0785)

Sand Mountain, NV (0785)
Sand Mountain Recreation Area, an OHV (off highway vehicle) recreation area operated by BLM. The mountain is 600 feet high and 2 miles long. Though such areas attract large numbers of people, the desire to be around loud machines, RV's parked close together, rule-less OHV driving, and sand everywhere, is incomprehensible to me. Apparently many had driven a fairly great distance, since most of the RV's that I saw had California tags.

I'm sure this is a special sort of hell. I can't really think of an Eastern equivalent, at least not at this magnitude. I'll have to ponder that a while.

When I was a teen my brother did this in the sand dunes near Jacksonville, though they were much lower. I don't think that's allowed any more, partly because many of those dunes are now residences.

I don't venture out on the dunes when they're like this! But if you visit mid-week it's a lot quieter, or at least it used to be. There's also a 4wd track that comes in from the north side--did that years ago, but of course didn't have a good camera then. If your vehicle can handle sand, you can even cross the pass to come out on the west side of Sand Mtn, where you eventually join 50 about at that point west of the mtn where the highway climbs slightly. Along the way you pass a memorial to the crew of a Navy helicopter killed back in the 70s during training--more than a little poignant.

It's those damn Californians, ruining everything yet again! Too often when I'm out in some quite space in Nevada or Oregon and there's some approaching obnoxious behavior, it's someone with a California plate (could be rental). I see the road on the west side in the satellite view, looks worth exploring.
