San Quentin from Corte Madera (1706)

San Quentin from Corte Madera (1706)
San Quentin State Prison, from Corte Madera, with a Golden Gate transit passenger ferry in between.

A month after this was taken, the median home (including condos) value in Corte Madera was just short of $1 million ($983,400) per Zillow. The ferry passing the prisons takes Marin County locals from the Larkspur ferry terminal to jobs in SF that allow them to pay those prices.

I suspect that very few of the residents of San Quentin were raised in such neighborhoods, had the education, background, or skin color to get the jobs that would let them live in Marin...

The lightbox version of this is fairly dramatic.

This is probably one of the strangest zoning combinations I think I've ever seen. What must it be like to be inside that place looking through the fence? I doubt it inspires much remorse ... though maybe the California department of prisons lets them eat cake.

San Quentin predates Marin becoming a wealthy suburb, which explains why it was put there but not how it managed to stay. The first prison built there was in 1852. I could not find specific details on the buildings seen here, but two of the major cell blocks were built in 1927 and 1934. The Golden Gate bridge, which was probably the largest contributor to Marin becoming a wealthy suburb, opened in 1937,
