East Yorkshire Scarborough & District open toppers on the Scarborough seafront service – 19 Aug 1987 (54-27)

East Yorkshire Scarborough & District open toppers on the Scarborough seafront service – 19 Aug 1987 (54-27)
Wednesday 19 August 1987 – Arriving at the North Bay terminus of the seafront service in Scarborough.

The seafront service which links the North Bay and South Bay had its origins with United Automobile Services but in September 1986, when under National Bus Company ownership, the southern part of the United operating area along with the garages at Scarborough and Pickering were transferred to East Yorkshire Motor Services which created a new subsidiary named Scarborough and District. The seafront service saw greater competition after deregulation when a number of other operators began working on the route.

As we arrived there were two other buses at the bus stop. The bus directly in front was 603 (OTY 403M), a Park Royal bodied Leyland Atlantean AN68/1R that had been new to Sunderland & District in March 1974 as a normal covered top bus.

In front of that was an Eastern Coachworks bodied Bristol VR that set off before I had thought to note which it was. Note how the darker coloured upper part of the body is held in place by fittings around the bus. The same clips would be utilised to hold on a hard top in place during the winter months.
