East Yorkshire Motor Services
Folder: Bus/coach companies A-H
East Yorkshire was one of my favourite bus operators in pre National Bus Company days. My only regret is not taking some decent photos of the magnificent colour scheme at the time.
When privatised in 1987 EYMS adopted a cream and deep red livery. The company remained independent for 31 years but on 18 June 2018 was sold to the Go-Ahead Group which adopted a nice four colour livery seen on some of… (read more)

Circa 1967 – East Yorkshire Motor Services 775 (CKH 775C), a Park Royal bodied AEC Renown new in March 1965, seen at Westwood bus station in Scarborough. Westwood was a charming little bus station that had a large coach park alongside, some coaches can the background. The whole bus station and coach park site is now occupied by a Tesco store and its car park.

October 1972 - East Yorkshire Motor Services 741 (3741 RH), a Harrington Cavalier bodied Leyland Leopard new in May 1963, seeing during a refreshment break at Scott's Cafe in Mytholmroyd. It was working the 1515 Blackpool to Hull express service and timed here between 1730 and 1800.
The service had a simple format with the coach travelling out and back within the day operating on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays (20 May to 15 October 1972); also Tuesdays and Thursdays (4 July to 12 October 1972).
Westbound timings were Hull (0900), Howden (0945), Selby (1005), Monk Fryston (1018), West Garforth (1034) and Halifax (1123). The refreshment break was then taken at Mytholmroyd (1140-1210) continuing via Hebden Bridge (1213), Todmorden (1225), Burnley (1247), Accrington (1302), Blackburn (1316), Preston (1340) and Blackpool (1425).
Eastbound timings were Blackpool (1515), Preston (1600), Blackburn (1624), Accrington (1638), Burnley (1653), Todmorden (1715), Hebden Bridge (1727), Mytholmroyd (1730-1800), Halifax (1817), West Garforth (1906), Monk Fryston (1921), Selby (1935), Howden (1955) and Hull (2040)
Express services were regulated at the time and the Road Service Licence for this service contained the following stipulations:
For passengers boarding at Hull or Howden the first set down was Halifax; boarding at Selby the first set down was Todmorden; and boarding at Monk Fryston or West Garforth the first set down was Accrington.
I don’t know exactly when the service ceased travelling via the Calder Valley route but this would have been fairly soon following the opening of the M62 motorway in the early 1970s. This was also around the time that the National Travel coach brand was introduced.

I am not totally sure of just where the café stood. From memory I believe the property in the background may be where the Co-op Filling Station and food store now are.

October 1972 - East Yorkshire Motor Services 741 (3741 RH), a Harrington Cavalier bodied Leyland Leopard new in May 1963, seeing travelling through Mytholmroyd when working the 1515 Blackpool to Hull express service. It had just taken a refreshment break at a local cafe (due 1730-1800) and was now continuing on its way.
The service had a simple format with the coach travelling out and back within the day operating on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays (20 May to 15 October 1972); also Tuesdays and Thursdays (4 July to 12 October 1972).

The background scene has only changed very slightly over the ensuing years. The Economic Stores building is a Sainsbury’s Local (at least I think it is the same building shell) although the old bus shelter has gone as the ground is now a small car park.

Photo by R H G Simpson of Oxford from whom I bought a number of period photographs in the 1960s.
East Yorkshire Motor Services 670 (VKH 670) is seen prior to departing on service 10 from Westwood Bus Station in Scarborough to Flamborough North Landing. I couldn't resist including this photograph as it features my Great Aunt Florrie who is visible through the window below the nearside driver's mirror. She would be returning home to Cayton Village after shopping or such. I also include the photograph because it was no doubt one of the buses I had travelled on when visiting her and her sister, Annie, visits I always enjoyed.
The magnificent dark blue, cream and white livery of EYMS buses and the visit out to Cayton, then a rural village which has now almost become a suburb of Scarborough, always brings back pleasant memories for me. As a schoolboy my Dad, born and raised in Scarborough in the 1920s, used to make the journey to stay with his Aunties Annie and Florrie for his annual holiday - all of a 3 mile bus ride! He recalled travelling by what was an independent operator at some point.
United Automobile Services also ran a service between Scarborough and Cayton Village (service 111) but my two Great Aunts would only use it when absolutely necessary - they were staunch supporters of East Yorkshire and their service 10. Service 10 operated between Scarborough and Hunmanby via Cayton Village and Filey. In the early 1960s a summer only extension to Flamborough (North Landing) was introduced and 670 carries a window sign for that destination. The Park Royal bodied Leyland Tiger Cub was new in 1957 and left the fleet 11 years later.
(Since it is not possible on Ipernity to omit the date a photograph was taken (to the right of the photograph), the date shown above has to be supposition otherwise the date taken would appear as the same date I uploaded the photograph (January 28 2015). That would appear very inaccurate and rather strange indeed).

East Yorkshire Motor Services early and late summer 1964 timetable for services 10/10A between Scarborough and Bridlington. My childhood holidays staying with Grandparents and family in Scarborough always involved a ride to Cayton Village to see my Great Aunts on this service. On one occasion one of my Aunties took me on that Mondays only service boarding on Seamer Road (near the Plaxtons factory) for the journey to Cayton Village. United Automobile Services also ran their Scarborough-Bridlington service 111 which competed with EYMS.

Monday 6 March 2000 (approx. 1440) – East Yorkshire Motor Services retains this Willowbrook bodied AEC Regent V in its heritage fleet which wears the well respected indigo blue livery relieved with two bands of cream and, at roof level, a band of white. This livery disappeared when the company was absorbed into the National Bus Company.
644 (VKH 44) was one of fifteen similar buses (634-648) which entered service in November 1956 most of which were allocated to Driffield garage for operation on service 12 (Hull-Beverley-Driffield-Bridlington-Filey-Scarborough).
Like most of the double deckers operated by EYMS this bus had the ‘Beverley Bar’ Gothic profile to negotiate a key obstacle on its route network in the form of the 15th century North Bar at Beverley.
The Bar has a Gothic shaped arch under which the buses had to pass. Using single deckers was possible but in order to use higher capacity double deckers EYMS met the challenge by having them built to match the shape of the arch. In the early 1970s a by-pass was constructed in the town and buses had no longer a need to pass under the arch thus enabling normal profile buses to be purchased thereafter.
