East Yorkshire Motor Services
Folder: Bus/coach companies A-H
East Yorkshire was one of my favourite bus operators in pre National Bus Company days. My only regret is not taking some decent photos of the magnificent colour scheme at the time.
When privatised in 1987 EYMS adopted a cream and deep red livery. The company remained independent for 31 years but on 18 June 2018 was sold to the Go-Ahead Group which adopted a nice four colour livery seen on some of… (read more)

Saturday 10 November 2012 (0950) – East Yorkshire Motor Services (trading as Scarborough & District) 421 (Y351 DAB) is an Optare Solo M850 which was seen leaving Westborough, the main street in Scarborough, on service 14 to Newby.
The Solo isn’t too common in the EYMS fleet and this one was new in 2001 to Go Whittle, a company in the EYMS Group at the time. 356 (YX57 BXD), an Alexander Dennis Enviro200 bodied Dart new in 2007, is in front.
Judging by the rear end advert the bus had been transferred to Scarborough garage from Hornsea. The advert is for KCOM, the telecommunications company that had its origins as Hull Corporation Telephones. In 1902 Hull Corporation was granted a licence under the Telegraph Act to own and operate its own telephone system as were a number of other municipalities but gradually these were taken over by Post Office Telephones/British Telecom. Hull’s system has remained independent and the advert tells of expansion beyond the city of Kingston-upon-Hull (Hull).

The Grand Hotel stands beyond that, opened in 1867 the ‘V’ shaped building pays homage to Queen Victoria. The building was designed around the theme of time with 4 towers to represent the seasons (the two of the open ‘V’ almost appear in this photograph although one of them is almost obscured by the leaves on the tree!), 12 floors for the months of the year, 52 chimneys for the weeks. Originally there were 365 bedrooms - one for each day of a non-leap year.

Friday 21 August 1987 – Valley Bridge bus station in Scarborough.
Left: The West Yorkshire Road Car Company services from Leeds to the Yorkshire Coast were branded ‘Yorkshire Coastliner’ - a name which went from strength to strength as a registered company name after privatisation. Having worked to Scarborough from its base at Malton 1858 (C480 YWY) was soon to work the 0900 service 843 to Leeds, a journey of about 70 miles taking 2.5 hours. New in October 1985 it was an Eastern Coachworks bodied Leyland Olympian fitted with higher backed semi-coach seating. (Within days of this photograph WYRCC was privatised. Reported in ‘Commercial Motor’ magazine dated 3 September 1987).
