East Yorkshire Motor Services
Folder: Bus/coach companies A-H
East Yorkshire was one of my favourite bus operators in pre National Bus Company days. My only regret is not taking some decent photos of the magnificent colour scheme at the time.
When privatised in 1987 EYMS adopted a cream and deep red livery. The company remained independent for 31 years but on 18 June 2018 was sold to the Go-Ahead Group which adopted a nice four colour livery seen on some of… (read more)

Thursday 11 August 1994 (approx. 0730) – East Yorkshire Motor Services is the larger operator in Scarborough and runs its local services under the Scarborough and District name. This was the garage in Dunslow Road, Eastfield.
979 (RTH 928S), was an Eastern Coachworks bodied Bristol VR that had been new to South Wales Transport (928) in March 1978. It was however acquired from Berks Bus circa 1992.
Standing behind is Duple Dominant bodied Leyland Tiger number 28 which was new to London Country Bus Services as a Green Line coach in April 1983 as their TD23 (YPD 123Y). It was later re-registered to become OJI 7078. I believe the blue and yellow livery is that of the previous owner Kinch of Mountsorrel.

Wednesday 19 August 1987 – A high frequency service is provided by East Yorkshire/Scarborough & District on the Scarborough seafront service which links the North Bay and South Bay. This service had its origins with United Automobile Services.
In September 1986, when under National Bus Company ownership, the southern part of the United operating area along with the garages at Scarborough and Pickering were transferred to East Yorkshire Motor Services which created a new subsidiary named Scarborough and District.
In this view at the North Bay terminus is 903 (931 GTA) which carries the East Yorkshire fleet name and the name Bridlington Star. It was a Metro-Cammell bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1 that was new to Devon General in June 1961 as their DL931 – one of nine convertible buses each named after a famous historical mariner thus coining the term the ‘Sea Dog’ class. This bus was named Sir Thomas Howard but more in keeping with its work on the Yorkshire coast it became Bridlington Star for work at that resort but here it was in Scarborough. (EYMS also operated 932 GTA named Belvedere Star).
The bus standing behind is a Park Royal bodied Leyland Atlantean AN68/1R that carried Scarborough and District fleet names.

Saturday 27 February 1999 - East Yorkshire Motor Services/Scarborough and District 457 (R457 PRH), a Plaxton bodied Mercedes-Benz O 814D new in July 1998, seen in Victoria Road, Scarborough.
Vine Street is behind the bus and where until around the 1940s there was a bus garage owned by the West Yorkshire Road Car Company from where the services of West Yorkshire and East Yorkshire departed.
From my childhood I recall an unusual feature of Corrison’s Hairdressers shop. In the rendering on the building (left of the first floor window they had set a small collection of implements of their trade – a pair of scissors, a comb etc.
