Der Palmenstrand von Preveli - The palm beach of Preveli

Einen der erstaunlichsten Mittelmeerstrände findet man in Preveli: Ein Badestrand, in den ein Süßwasserfluss mündet, der weithin mit Palmen gesäumt ist (siehe PiPs). Der Strand von Preveli liegt am Ausgang der imposanten Kourtaliotikos-Schlucht (siehe vorheriges Foto), in welcher der Fluss Megas Potamos fließt. Es ist sicherlich der bekannteste Strand in Süd Kreta, der jeden Sommer von Tausenden besucht wird. Während den Sechzigern und Siebzigern, war er ein bevorzugtes Ziel vonHippies. In Preveli findet man einen der wenigen Standorte der Kretischen Dattelpalme (Phoenix theophrasti). Deswegen ist der gesamte Palmenbestand ein Naturschutzgebiet, der allerdings wegen des starken Tourismus bedroht ist.

One of the most astonishing Mediterranean beaches can be found in Preveli: a bathing beach where a freshwater river flows into the sea, lined with palm trees along much of its course (see PiPs). Preveli Beach lies at the exit of the impressive Kourtaliotikos Gorge (see previous photo), through which the Megas Potamos River flows. It is certainly the best-known beach in southern Crete and is visited by thousands every summer. During the 1960s and 70s, it was a favorite destination for hippies. Preveli is home to one of the few remaining stands of the Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti). For this reason, the entire palm grove is a protected nature reserve, though it is threatened by the heavy tourism in the area.
