Dieses interessante Vehikel fand ich bei einer kleinen Wanderung auf der Insel Kreta am Rande eines Olivenhains. Eine abenteuerliche Konstruktion, wohl alles aus Einzelteilen in Handarbeit gemacht, und das Wichtigste: vorschriftsmäßig gesichert und startklar! This interesting vehicle caught my eye during a short hike on the island of Crete, at the edge of an olive grove. An adventurous construction - probably all handmade from individual parts - and the best part: properly secured and ready for takeoff!

In der Stadtmitte von Archanes (Kreta) findet sich an einer Hauswand dieses mächtige Graffito, das einen zürnenden Zeus darstellt. Der Hintergrund für dieses eindrucksvolle Wandgemälde: In der Antike glaubten die Kreter, dass auf dem Berg Giouchtas (bei Archanes) der Gott Zeus begraben wurde. Ein Indiz dafür sollte die Form des Gebirges sein, das aus Norden gesehen aussieht wie der Kopf des schlafenden Zeus. The background to this impressive mural: in antiquity the Cretans believed that the god Zeus was buried on Mount Giouchtas (near Archanes). One indication was said to be the shape of the mountain range, which, when viewed from the north, looks like the head of a sleeping Zeus. In Karavostasi (Kreta) fand ich diese blühende und fruchtende Bananenstaude direkt neben der Straße in einem kleinen Vorgarten. Wie man im Bild sieht, wurden schon etliche Bananen geerntet, hoffentlich von den Besitzern und nicht von Passanten. de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bananen In Karavostasi (Crete), I found this flowering and fruiting banana plant right next to the road in a small front garden. As you can see in the picture, quite a few bananas have already been harvested, hopefully by the owners and not by passers-by.

Bei einer Wanderung auf Kreta sah ich diese recht große, einsam in die karge Landschaft gebaute Kirche, umgeben von Wildbüschen und Olivenhainen. Nach meinen Recherchen ist ihr Name "Heiliger Geist - Άγιο Πνεύμα" While hiking on Crete, I saw this rather large church standing alone in the barren landscape, surrounded by wild shrubs and olive groves. According to my research, its name is ‘Holy Spirit – Άγιο Πνεύμα.’

Einen der erstaunlichsten Mittelmeerstrände findet man in Preveli: Ein Badestrand, in den ein Süßwasserfluss mündet, der weithin mit Palmen gesäumt ist (siehe PiPs). Der Strand von Preveli liegt am Ausgang der imposanten Kourtaliotikos-Schlucht (siehe vorheriges Foto), in welcher der Fluss Megas Potamos fließt. Es ist sicherlich der bekannteste Strand in Süd Kreta, der jeden Sommer von Tausenden besucht wird. Während den Sechzigern und Siebzigern, war er ein bevorzugtes Ziel vonHippies. In Preveli findet man einen der wenigen Standorte der Kretischen Dattelpalme (Phoenix theophrasti) . Preveli Beach lies at the exit of the impressive Kourtaliotikos Gorge (see previous photo), through which the Megas Potamos River flows. It is certainly the best-known beach in southern Crete and is visited by thousands every summer. During the 1960s and 70s, it was a favorite destination for hippies. Preveli is home to one of the few remaining stands of the Cretan date palm (Phoenix theophrasti) . For this reason, the entire palm grove is a protected nature reserve, though it is threatened by the heavy tourism in the area.

Die recht vegetationsarme Kourtaliotiko-Schlucht mit ihren natürlichen Höhlen ist ein Naturschutzgebiet. Dieser beeindruckende Rest des Königspalastes von Knossos auf Kreta findet sich häufig in Geschichtsbüchern. Auch ich habe als Schüler dieses Bild oft bestaunt. Das Fresko hinter den Säulen zeigt einen Stier mit goldenen Hörnern vor einem Olivenbaum. Der Stier war ein heiliges Tier, das mit Fruchtbarkeit, Stärke und Macht in Verbindung gebracht wurde. As a schoolboy, I too often marvelled at this image. The fresco behind the columns shows a bull with golden horns in front of an olive tree. The bull was a sacred animal associated with fertility, strength and power. It was probably also a symbol of the god of the sky or nature, who ruled over rain, fertility and life.

Einer der Höhepunkte im Palast von Knossos ist der greifengeschmückten Thronsaal , das zeremonielle Zentrum des Palastes. Man muss sich aber klar sein, dass der britische Archäologe Sir Arthur Evans Anfang der 1900er Jahre einen Großteil des Knossos-Komplexes restaurierte. Instead of preserving the ruins in their original condition, he chose to reconstruct parts of the palace using modern materials such as steel-reinforced concrete, plaster, and paint. The Palace of Knossos was built between 2100 and 1800 BC on the site of a Neolithic settlement. It was especially large (around 2 hectares!), wealthy, and magnificent. Shown in the picture is one of the most recent palaces in Knossos. I will show in the next image what is depicted in the wall painting.
