Monarchy

Monarchy
I just found out that an old Canadian make of car, the Ford Monarch, was in fact intended as a tribute to THE monarch, the one in England (who is also monarch in right of Canada). So this is my belated tribute to the coronation.

Our current king and his mother, by the way, are the only two monarchs to be crowned as monarchs of Canada. I saw the 1952 coronation on Canadian television -- after each reel of film was developed in England it was flown to Canada on a fighter jet.

Of course, the car's very regal -- look at the lion on the horn honker! And its slogan was "Ride like a king" (it came out in 1946, so George VI was the monarch then).

This is a model from 1961, the last year they were produced. I know I shouldn't have leaned into the car but there you are.

This was taken, by the way, at a Canadian Tire Sunday cruise, a longstanding Canadian tradition. Patriotic or what?

I added a shot of the exterior in the PiP at top left. You will see it has Dagmars. It also has a Continental tire kit on the back.

True, José. The Monarch was typical of the cars of the day -- unsafe and wasteful of gasoline. We forget things like that, though.

I don't have a TV, either, Gudrun. I don't know how many people watched in Canada. Certainly there are many monarchists here, but they seem to be a definite minority. I think the problem is that Canada has so restricted the power of the monarch that they have too little involvement in Canadian affairs to either inspire anyone or make many people think it's imperative to get rid of them.

I don't know of Kevin Bridges I'm afraid (but I've just finished reading about him on Google).

There's an article here www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2023/05/07/king-charles-coronation-concert-date-times-performers-how-watch that will give you an idea of the performers. You might be surprised :-)

That was quite a show, Keith. And it is appropriate for it to reflect the king's preferences. So I guess he's not keen on Drake. Or Justin Bieber. Céline Dion might be to his taste but she's not performing for a while because of medical problems.

If Canadians had been running the show it would have been different. I remember one Canada Day on which the TV networks showed provincial celebrations one after the other (going from one time zone to the next). Fiddlers, fiddlers, fiddlers. Then more fiddlers.
