Larnaca - Bekir Pasha Aqueduct

With a population of over 50,000, Larnaca is one of the largest cities in Cyprus. The Bekir Pasha Aqueduct is located just outside the city. It was built between 1747 and 1750 and supplied Larnaca with fresh water for nearly two centuries. It consisted of a total of 93 sheets. Of these, 75 are still preserved today. It bears the name Bekir Pasha because the aqueduct was paid for by Ebubekir Pasha, the Ottoman beylerbey of Cyprus at that time.

This is probably the first Ottoman mosque in Cyprus; originally, from the 13th to the 14th century, the building was a Catholic church dedicated to Saint Catherine. During the reign of James I, between 1382 and 1388, the fortress was expanded into a more substantial castle. In the 18th century, the castle lost its significance and was abandoned. During British rule, the castle was used as a prison. During the Cypriot Civil War, Greek Cypriots held the castle and also used it as a prison.
