The squid or octopus can blend into almost any underwater back-ground it naturally finds itself smiwwming in. but if it doesn’t want to blend it, it can place upon its body a series of pulsating, moving, dazzle-like stripes. It can even mix and match, making one side of its body appear invisible and the other side pulsating and patterning. They can communicate with each other by setting off moving patterns all over their skin, all the while being basically color-blind. They can disguise themselves to hide upon colors that they can’t even see. Male can suddenly change their appearance to look like female for the purpose of distracting other males.

How are they able to assess their situation in the environment and decide whether to stand out or blend in? We have no idea how this animal is able to turn its chromatophores on and off. These creatures are like virtual-reality avatars, changing their physical shape and appearance in forms of interaction we can barely grasp. Cuttlefish and related cephalopods, such as the mimic octopus, suggest a possible future direction for dazzle camouflage; . . . . Page 153
