A reconstruction of Zhoukoudian showing a group fashioning tools of Bamboo and quartzite, and cooking meat on a fire. In the background dangerous hyenas are being driven away – it seems likely that humans and hyenas regularly competed both for shelter and food. Recent research has cast donut on the extent of human fire use at Zhoukoudian however.

We can only guess how the first cooked meal was discovered, and it was most likely an accident. Our culinary appetites were unlocked once we got a taste for it, and we never looked back. The great thing about cooked food is it has been broken down for us before it ever gets to our stomachs. The discovery of fire may have also coincided with our use of tools to cut animals up. Cooking meat unlocked nutrients.

Fire may have played into our development of higher brains. Fire, and the cooking of food, happened well before modern humans ever walked the earth. It started as a flicker in a distant, pre-Homo sapiens past. ~ Pag 189
