The Kudremukha township developed primarily as an iron ore mining town where the government ran Kudremukha Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL). This public sector company operated for almost 30 years but was closed in 2006 due to environmental issues.

Kudremukha receives an average annual rainfall of 7000 mm, (275.5 inches) largely due to the forest types of mainly evergreen vegetation that can be found here.
