Westbrecks crossing

17 Jul 2014 2 2 80
Sign overload at the approach to Westbrecks crossing on the railway serving Cottam power station. That's a lot for drivers to absorb whilst avoiding other traffic and road junctions. I am sure they are all deemed necessary but I doubt that the average motorist will register everything. The gated crossing sign is incorrect as there are no gates or barriers on this level crossing.

Red Devil in charge

Unique Class 26 3450 was withdrawn in 2004 and it took a lot of effort to restore it to service in 2018. Whilst it has since hauled a number of passenger services it does not normally get a chance to haul freight. The FarRail tour in 2019 saw Derick du Toit, owner of the Ceres Rail Company, reach agreement for the locomotive to haul a train consisting mainly of wagons loaded with cement plus several vans giving a total weight of around 690 tons. It is seen here a reaching the 1212ft summit at Mowers, 14 miles east of Worcester on the former New Cape Central Railway on a run from Ashton.

Ltd was acquired by Vaux & Associated Breweries and continued to brew bitter as a subsidiary. Despite still being profitable, the brewery was closed in 1999. The Wards brand was bought by the Double Maxim Beer Company in 2003 and is run as a subsidiary called Ward's Brewing Company.

Shugborough Arch

The Triumphal Arch at Shugborough is most likely to have been the first of the park monuments undertaken by Stewart and certainly the most prominent. Work started soon after 1761 and was completed in 1765. It is based on the Arch of Hadrian in Athens. In 1760, Thomas Anson suffered a huge loss, with the death of his close friend and sister-in-law, Elizabeth York, and again in 1762, with the death of his brother George. Thomas memorialised them both by adding their busts in the outer arches. In the central arch, Thomas added an ‘aplustre’, a commemorative plaque. It depicts naval trophies and other attributes linked to his Admiral brother’s illustrious life.

Limekilns

20 Jun 2009 4 1 59
Four Maerz PFR limekilns at the Tata Steel operated Hardendale Quarry at Shap. A PFR kiln (parallel flow regenerative shaft kiln) consists of two vertical shafts and a connecting crossover channel. Both shafts work with each other. While one calcines the product, the other preheats the stone. In the burning shaft the lime is calcined in parallel flow. The hot combustion gases are then transferred through the crossover channel to the non-burning shaft where they preheat the limestone in counter flow in the upper area of the shaft. The flow direction of the gases is reversed at regular intervals. This allows the regenerative preheating of the stone to take place (the stone in the preheating zone of the kiln acts as heat exchanger) and thus for the maximum use of the heat contained in the kiln gases. The principle of calcination in parallel flow is ideal for the production of high-reactive quicklime. A PFR kiln from Maerz processes up to 800 tons of burnt lime per day.
