Bailey Hall Mill

07 Mar 2017 5 1 411
The Halifax Flour Society was formed on 1st May 1847 to provide a co-operative corn mill following discontent against the Corn Laws, corn dealers' prices, and because much flour was adulterated. The Society sold to the public through agents. Initially 2,800 people bought £1 shares, and the Society bought a mill at Bailey Hall from where the first batch of cheap flour was sold in 1848. When the Bailey Hall mill became too small, a new 6-storey Bailey Hall was built in 1862. This was one of the most modern grain mills at the time and was opened with a party for 1,400 people on April 7, 1863. Later the Society bought more land at Bailey Hall and a new mill was opened in 1880. This is the building seen here. The Society was sold to the Co-operative Wholesale Society in 1915 and the Bailey Hall mill was sold to Paton & Baldwin. This mill eventually closed for flour production in the 1930s. It is now occupied by Nestlé.

Slag pots

Slag pots in the new smelter at Namtu, Myanmar which was constructed after the Second World War when the old smelter was destroyed. It processed lead, silver, zinc and copper from the Bawdwin mines but has been out of use for some time. It was suggested that it would reopen in 2012 but I have not heard anything of this since my visit.

3

There was never any doubt as to which locomotive you were seeing at Dahuichang because the number was daubed on the tender cab and front in messy white paint. No finesse and no fancy number plates here. A down to earth limestone carrying railway with the tiny trucks. No.3 is here heading back to the loading tunnel.

Working with his brothers to retail shoes they traded for many years as varous incarnations of the Public Benefit Boot Company. It is constructed of squared rock-faced granite with ashlar quoins, dressings and arch-rings. It is a double-track viaduct with twelve 50ft arches built almost in a straight line and is about 700 ft long with its greatest height at about 100ft. Although the line was closed south of Lydford in 1968 there are regular proposals for reinstatement to provide a second railway link to Cornwall. It is listed Grade II.
