The Pike under the stars

The Pike under the stars
A promising clear night draws me again to this local Hartshead Pike monument. We are looking south here with the bright lights of Greater Manchester encroaching from the right. I was hoping for a darker sky but I was perhaps a few hours too early for that.

Enjoy full screen.

John FitzGerald, Steve Paxton, TOZ, Colin Ashcroft and 8 other people have particularly liked this photo

Good that you have enjoyed this Patrick. Only three things needed to make photos like this: clear dark night sky, a suitable camera with tripod and the urge to try something different. Hope you manage it some day.

Thanks for this Keith. On the last night of our holiday in Norfolk, I looked outside and was amazed how totally black it was with stars between the nearby trees as bright as burning torches. I took some photos of that too but have yet to finalise them. - Last night I knew it was going to be dark and so rushed up here at 10pm to capture this. however the sky was nowhere near as black as Norfolk, plus the invading Manchester city lights made for only a photo such as this. However, very pleased that you thought it so successful and I really appreciate your comment here.

We don't have any really dark places near us nowadays Herb, light pollution seems to be everywhere!

You did really well in Norfolk though!

Thanks for this Chris. Too much light and poor technique shutter speed resulting is star movement here but heh - I don't get a lot of practice of stars nowadays :)

Glad you liked it Peter. Yes, a little late to be of the blue hour as I had to walk with a head-torch. Funny thing is, I don't get to do many shots of that blue hour at all.

Well worth the effort. It has great potential for another effort but I’m not sure how easy it will be to improve a darker sky changes everything

Thanks Colin. I should have known better as the light pollution up here is terrible. It did not help that my head-lamp battery faded on me here. No doubt I will try again in time -perhaps another go at multiple stitched photos.

Hi Toz, I know you have tried a few night star photos too and so know the routine here. I had hoped to capture the Milky Way but I could not see it with my naked eye so ended with this pictorial shot. My ambition was to catch the MW behind the tower but.... Glad you liked it.

Herb its a great shot, close you do see the stars movment the biggest part is it all happens so fast you dont have time to think. I believe 10 out of 10 for what you did get most would not have tried let alone leave home. if you had gone to 10 sec I think you would have nailed the shot I think the moral is never give in. Most would just pass it by top marks for trying and capturing a great image none the less. A sky I see so little of Thank you.

Hi Steve and sorry for late reply. Always good to read your appraisal of my star shots. At the end of the day I was quite pleased with this but know I could have done better. One of the few I have taken with the 'Clear night filter' where it seems to have worked good. I had some with about 5 & 10 ending with a darker sky but not this foreground.

Take care. Herb
