Glenfinnan Viaduct- a study!

Glenfinnan Viaduct- a study!
Glenfinnan Viaduct- a study!

In November 2016 we had the pleasure to wander and sit by this viaduct for some time waiting for the famous Jacobite steam train. We were to be rewarded but now almost ten years later I see that I omitted to share some of my other photos of it here on Ipernity. Here is a capture from below the viaduct. No train but sixteen lovely arches of the total twenty one along the 416 yard (380m) length. They span 50 feet each and have a highest height of 100 feet. The weather was to turn much better with clear blue skies but this sky sets the tone here.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct is a famous Victorian-era railway bridge in Scotland, known for its 21 arches, use of mass concrete, and iconic appearances in the Harry Potter films as the Hogwarts Express's route. Built by Robert McAlpine & Sons and completed in 1901, it carries the West Highland Line over the River Finnan, offering views of a picturesque landscape

Both photos are great ones, my fave is this one, the composition is dynamic and the grey sky adds to it*****************

Outstanding The sky really make the image it gives the look of age. Yes the Hogworts train but I think this stand out on its own does not need a train...

A very good capture of the viaduct, you have chosen your position well! The cloudy sky looks suitably Scottish:-)

Such a wonderful shot Herb...........full of depth and lovely detail. The light is gorgeous despite )or maybe because of) the grey sky.

I love the sweep of the viaduct across that magnificent landscape!

The image in the PiP is excellent..!!

My thanks for this comment with the link too. Your own capture is quite marvellous. I did think about finding a higher viewpoint for the passing train but at the time I felt happy about my spot. I will be passing here again next year and so I might get something better too.

Thanks for this Gordon. The Scottish equivalent of Ribbkehead Viaduct perhaps. You would have a field day here. We pass by this next year and so I hope for more then. We actually visited it too as oars of a bus tour in horrendous weather. The bus stopped for 30 mins but not a decent photo taken.

Thanks for your considered remarks here Diana. Not quite as thrilling as some of your wild Asian mountain bridges but this has a certain charm.
