757 flyover

15 Feb 2019 12 5 259
An Icelandair Boeing 757-300 seen, I think not far from my home on one of our usual regular walks in the hills. This plane is quite old being being 19 years old when I took this in 2019. ***TF-ISX*** People who know me, will know that I have a love of aviation and so when I see something like this, with my camera, I often point up and shoot. Garden Bicycle

18 Apr 2018 19 13 416
Seen in a Normandy, France cottage garden. As the front tyre was flat ? I imagine this more of a garden showpiece than a practical ride to market. A very French ritual! Enjoy the day. CWP (2024/03) "Bicycles, Tricycle's or Cargo bikes": 26th

The demolition of an Industrial chimney

05 Apr 2009 20 20 612
The date: April 5 2009, almost 25 years back to the day, at the edge of the Lancashire town of Clitheroe. A chance capture as I was taking photos of the mist and birds on the nearby River Ribble when I heard a rumble. I looked towards the cement works across the river and saw the chimney starting to topple. As the camera was in my hands and already in fast shoot mode (I was trying also to get some flying herons) I managed to catch this before it disappeared in a cloud of dust behind the buildings. It was made of concrete and 460 feet high (140m). A moment never to be relived here. BBC News: “One of the tallest industrial chimneys in Lancashire has been demolished. The chimney was part of the Hanson cement plant in Clitheroe and was connected to two kilns that were decommissioned two years ago. The fall of the chimney at the cement works, formerly called Castle Cement, was witnessed by onlookers as it dropped at 1000 BST on Sunday.” It was built in the 1960's out of reinforced concrete and was much hated by the local residents of Clitheroe because of smells and fumes (refuted). It was in fact surrounded in most parts by beautiful rural countryside. Enjoy full screen HAPPY EASTER

Reaching High

In this European Tree of the Year 2020 we can enjoy another look at this fine Silver Birch here in Chew Valley, Saddleworth. A splendid tree in all seasons but with this almost surreal natural cloud background it is something else. How-Zat

09 Apr 2024 11 11 324
Apologise first of all as I accidently deleted this and all the great comments on it from my Ipernity pages earlier today. I would be very happy if anybody who had commented previously could re-instate their comments here again. The British sport of cricket is known is known as a gentleman’s game as it so slow and relaxing. Here we have a local village match, generally played only on Sundays. Now it is generally sought by photographers to grab a shot of either, a ball being caught by a fielder or the ball hitting the wickets to get a man out! The latter is normally very difficult to get as it last for only a fraction of a moment and the ball is rarely in the frame. One can also wait for hours for the moment. Now I must admit here that I am not a great cricket fan and have attended only a handful of matches in my lifetime. On this day I was using my Canon AE1 35mm camera and had just aimed it at the stumps of the batter when I saw the ball being bowled. I shot as many frames as I could having no idea what I really got. Here is the result with a very rare ball actually hitting the wicket and driving the stumps into the air – with the cries of “How-Zat” (OUT) all around me This from a 1976 slide. Enjoy full screen

The Cuillins from Drunbuie.

07 May 2024 31 30 658
Who says we have to have sunny clear blue skies for good landscapes. Here is one taken on my recent Scottish trip. A wonderful walk to and from the Drunbui Railway halt here and since it is Spring the yellow gorse is radiant too. We are actually at a place called Port Cam, south of Plockton which is north of Kyle of Lochalsh in North West Scotland and I am looking north over Loch Carron. Loch Lochy splendour.

11 May 2024 26 32 681
Between Fort William and Loch Ness there are two other Lochs: Loch Oich and Loch Lochy. This is the larger of the two, Loch Lochy with its most splendid reflections to the North West in this case. The two photo panorama was taken at the popular viewpoint stop at Letter Finlay. "Loch Lochy is a large freshwater loch in Lochaber, Highland, Scotland. It is 15km (9 miles) long with an average width of 1km and a mean depth of 70 m (230ft), it is the third-deepest loch of Scotland." WiKi Essential full screen. Memories of Tuscany: Siena - Palazzo Pubblico

12 May 2011 35 33 503
A view from the inside of this wonderful palace or to be more exact, the internal courtyard, that lends us a high clear view outside, to the tall tower of Mangia. Inside here on the walls are quite a few things of interest including this bronze sculpture of ‘The Capitoline Wolf’ depicting a scene from the legend of the founding of Rome. The sculpture shows a she-wolf suckling the mythical twin founders of Rome, Romulus and Remus. See PiP Enjoy full screen CWP Rising to the Sky 2024, 17th place

High Power Mk1

A rectangular patterned version of the adjacent mono one here. (Both being the same shot in reality.) I know some of my viewers will have a preference as to which one is better and why, but we are all different as is the way we see the world. Feel free to comment on each photo:) Enjoy CWP Rising to the Sky 2024, Joint Runner Up

As a neighbour has their house extended it gives me an opportunity to catch a man at work. He is actually cementing and 'pointing' the new ridge tiles here. CWP Sept 2024 The Daily work: 12th

Natures colour display

07 May 2021 23 21 538
Our week in the Scottish village of Aberfoye had many rewards not least an hour or so of rainbow weather. Here is a double rainbow section pointing to the pot of gold in the trees but I do like the light rays from the top left too. Best full screen CWP Oct 2024 Rainbows: 18th

Autumn leaves, autumn colours.

11 Nov 2024 29 22 534
A walk at the foot of my local Chew valley shows me once again this familiar view which in autumn is at its best. A scene that could almost be a painting greets me. Only when it is bedecked with new snow is it scenically as good. Best full screen

Budapest - The Liberty Bridge in the blue hour

20 Oct 2024 17 6 581
As the sun drops below the horizon here in Budapest I see some attractive colours around this bridge. "Liberty Bridge or Freedom Bridge in Budapest, Hungary, connects Buda and Pest across the River Danube. It is the third southernmost public road bridge in Budapest, located at the southern end of the City Centre. It was originally named Ferenc József híd." A dusty Ice Road

17 May 2016 18 17 470
A trip to the Athabasca Glacier in the Canadian Rocky Mountains gives us a ride inside a mighty juggernaut with vast wide tyres. Each vehicle which is loosely called a bus normally takes visitors over ice hills before letting the people out to explore themselves on the 100 metres or so coned area of glacier surface. This they did in awe, shivering before snapping away with their phones, then jumping up and down to see if they could create new crevasses :) However even in 2016 the ice had receded so far back that we were now traveling on a wide dirt track road instead of the glacier. One had to hold on tight as the vehicle seemed at times to be almost vertical. You see here a relatively flat section but you can also see the real ice road with a red bus returning below left. See part of the road too in the first PiP. Essential full screen. CWP Roads, Jan 2025, 35th Place

The St Gotthard Pass

21 Sep 2013 28 28 543
A 2013 look at this famous pass showing the old twisty road down to the municipality of Airolo in the canton of Ticino Switzerland. This was taken from the bigger newer road which runs to the same place. We are on the way back to Britain from Italy and have just travelled north up to this point from Airolo. We continue upwards for a some distance from here before plunging down the other side towards Lake Lucern (Vierwaldstättersee) still in Switzerland. Of course the tunnel running directly under here is a far more convenient way to travel to both places but..... The Gotthard Pass or St. Gotthard Pass at 2,106 m is a mountain pass in the Alps traversing the Saint-Gotthard Massif and connecting northern Switzerland with southern Switzerland. It is 26km (16 miles) long. Best full screen ps see Luis Miguel's comment below for more info. CWP Winner, Roads, Jan 2025
