Whitby Swing Bridge in action

Whitby Swing Bridge in action
After reading Rosalyn Hilborne's comment on the previous page I tried to take a look on line to see the bridge opened and was surprised of how few there were and also what poor quality ones there was of them. So I took a look in my archives and found this from 2014, when we were last there. Hope you enjoy it.

As always, deserves full size.

That's impressive. I've never seen a picture of this bridge open wide like this!

A lovely view of the harbour and town Herb..............sharp and detailed from front to back.

Good that you see it all. The quay you see on the left is just for light pleasure craft think.

Estupenda Herb, veo las dos partes del puente, abierto al paso del velero y la población como enmarcada entre las dos.

Hi José. good to see you here again. Yes, quite often a big crowd watches this bridge when it is opened like this. Good that you liked it.

Hi again Toz, yes, I too have seen this open on a number of occasions in the past, especially when a large cargo boat was passing by. I don't think there is as much big traffic now.

Thank you so much for finding this one from your archives Herb. It is a very impressive bridge! I see one man standing on it....that would be fun, as it opened ;-)
Take care and have a good weekend. Rosa.

I would think, Rosalyn... that the man would be staff.. as he is on a moving section of the bridge..

Hi Rosa, delighted to se you here having found this especially for you. Judging from the amount of comments here, it seems that this moment has been well received. As said elsewhere, I too think that lone man is the bridge operator.

An excellent archive image Herb, Is this a rare event then ?
Herb Riddle club has replied to Roger (Grisly) club
I think it may be rarer now than it used to be Roger. There is in fact a large marina just to the right in the distance and also some warehousing for what I think is timber related goods in the far distance left? There used to be many cargo ships with that timber? but I think that this has all gone quite now. In the summer I imagine many yachts like this would travel along here as in the photo.

Memory of nearly missing the last bus back to York because of the bridge opening.

Herb Riddle club has replied to HappySnapper
Yes Maurice, it can be opened for quite some time if my memory serves me correctly. You remind me of us nearly missing a continental ferry waiting for a lifting bridge to close.

Another great image of the bridge, Herb. We have had many lifting bridges here (though disappearing), but I really don't think I've previously seen a swing bridge such as this.
