Man-made volcano

Man-made volcano
Well not really, it is in fact a view over to ‘Buckton Vale Quarry’ near the small town of Mossley and nearby Carbrook. We have followed the ‘New Direction’ road as seen in the preceding picture and now we have this fine winter vista. We had intended to walk down to the foot of that large dome where there is yet another small reservoir but these dark clouds forced us to turn tail.

ps the quarry is used for gritstone and sandstone extraction.

Enjoy full screen.

I presume this is in that long northwest to southeast inroad into the national park that you can see on the maps. Fine shot, Herb!

Hi Andy and good that you have enjoyed this one. Not too sure about your inroad but this is def a part of the Pennines. The Pennine way runs only yards away from here. (I think)

I didn't make myself clear, Herb. Sorry!
If you look at a map of The Peak District, you see that its boundary excludes an area that is surrounded by the Park itself. This includes Whaley Bridge, Capel-en-le Frith and Buxton as here: www.google.es/maps/search/peak+district+national+park+map/@53.2771569,-1.9377537,10.25z?hl=en
Best wishes,
Andy

A superb expansive view Herb. Someone as experienced as you and your wife know when it's time to head home ;-)) Cheers, Rosa.

Thanks for this Rosa -not that experienced in all that, as it never did rain but we had gone far enough as it was (5.6 miles done here.)

A huge and vast plateau!
The light and shadow are playing and the stunning landscape is enriched
The sky is stunning and threatens rain, as you well say
So well captured, Herb

Always nice to see your reactions over these local area shots of mine Judite. It never did rain -only a threat. Glad you, like me, liked the sky here. It all changed some minutes later back to an overcast grey.

An extraordinary landscape Herb...............I really like the light on the snow-capped hills in the far distance............and the threatening sky. Some beautiful earthy colours and super detail in the rest of the image and I especially like the remains of the snow in the foreground.

A good decision to call it a day i suspect!

I am lucky, I know to live in such an exciting wild landscape area Kieth. It may be 'grim' up eer north but there are some benefits, especially toting a camera -if you are fit enough to do all that! Very glad that this has pleased you.

Glad you noticed it George. A great deal of our Pennine landscape has been and is being scrapped and dug away, mainly for road surfaces.

Hi Herb

I really like this

Superb colours for the time of year.

Discretion being the better part of valour, I think you did the right thing turning back. I just read about a couple of guys who had to be rescued from Ben Nevis, and then promptly got fines for breaking lockdown!!

Best Wishes, and keep safe!
