Belfast -City Hall

Belfast -City Hall
A look back on my trip here last year. A great structure and, as you can see, a very pleasant place to relax.

Belfast City Hall is the civic building of Belfast City Council located in Donegall Square, Belfast, Northern Ireland. It faces North and effectively divides the commercial and business areas of the city centre. First planned in 1888 and building started in 1898. Wikipedia

Know it well you can see the Eisenhower obelsik on here too next to Queen Victoria. Lived in NI for near 25 years

Thanks Richard. We were very pleasantly surprised at seeing such a building as this in the heart of the city. A fact no doubt appreciated by locals and tourist alike. We took the open-top tour bus and it was very good indeed, seeing all the 'historical' area's and old docks too. We are in Ireland again soon but not the north.

I forget where, but one of the cities in South Africa apparently has a city hall thats a replica of Belfast's, possibly Durban? Did you see HMS Caroline? I was based there for some time.

Thanks Toz. Yes, there is a lot to see in Northern Ireland and Belfast has a lot to offer. Of curse you are still reminded of the 'troubles' if you drive into the Bogside' etc but all is looking up. Another recommended place but not just the North.

Certainly was imposing, but in a nice way George. These domed building always remind me of St Peters, Rome or St Paul's, London.

I remembered to have been there! Yes, in 2006. I have only the photos of the City Hall, Guild Hall and Dormont Castle and a lot of murals.

Hi Daniela. I think when we were there last year it had already changed considerably since 2006. We saw Stormont too (see Pip) and also the murals. Maybe you did the same city tour that we did? Cheers for the visit here. Herb

An impressive bit of architectrure - captured in lovely light and great detail. I especially like the way you've composed this with the leaves at the top and the pathway and people in the foreground.

It looks superb viewed large, on black, as you can see the architectural details much better.

Hi Keith, always good that you continue to enjoy my stuff here. I often frame buildings of this sort, mainly with trees if I can as the green give a more natural appearance to it. I always post my pictures fairly large for full screen viewing. Some people see that as foolish as too easy to make screen shots and edit my name out. Incidentally, I stated adding a signature after finding so many of photos scattered around the world freely being used to advertise places, often without any acknowledgement to me as being the author. Jeff, my photos are often nothing special but at least I can try my best to frame them and take them from the best place -unlike so many other people (fortunately for me :) )

An elaborate building designed to impress and show wealth

Sure is and was Peter. As Steve says below, we see few buildings made to impress nowadays other than glass or concrete obelisk designed number one for the inhabitants not our future children.

That is a very ornate building one that would not be built the same these days. This is what I loved about Europe these old buildings.

Ah yes, I would miss these buildings too in your par of the world. Of course these grand buildings extend to South America too with the old Spanish influence. See my reply to Peter above for more thoughts.

Always glad to please you here Rosa. On thinking of my coming trip to Ireland again, I realised that I had not posted very little from my previous short trip to Belfast.
