Wow! These are beauties ... been wondering if the whooping cranes are back this year. Someone reported very low water in the area this year.

It is an amazing sight. We've been there several times in the winter. There have always been thousands of sandhill cranes. They mostly feed on land, so I don't know if low water would bother them. Have you ever been there ?

These are only a small fraction of them, Marie-claire. There were thousands of cranes in this large field.

Thanks, Janet. It is a wonderful place to visit in the winter with so many birds enjoying their "vacations".

Excellent shot Roland, that's a good reach on that camera with little loss in quality.
WE have a Crane breeding program on going where I go for my wetland photography.

Ronald Losure club has replied to HappySnapper
Thank you, Maurice. There is a breeding program in Wisconsin from which some of these whooping cranes came. The sandhill cranes have changed their migration patterns in the last ten years or so to spend their winters here in northern Alabama.

I am envious. What a great sight.

Ronald Losure club has replied to Doerthe club
It is a fairly recent thing. I understand the cranes used to stop in Nebraska. Now many of them fly on to Alabama. The whooping cranes have only been coming here a few years after they refused to follow the ultra-light airplane any further.
