At the moment they are frequently seen in gardens and green spaces: the European orchard bees (Osmia cornuta). With their bright rust-red abdomen and strong hairiness, they are hard to overlook and many people confuse them with bumblebees. Like all mason bees, the European orchard bee lives solitary, thus does not form states, and lays up to 12 cells in series in crevices and tubes, in each of which 1 egg is laid on previously deposited pollen. The resulting larva then feeds on this food supply. The pupal stage ends around autumn. The hatched mason bees then remain in their nest over the winter.
The photo and the PiP show a Europeas orchard bee sitting on a daisy flower. It is a male, which can be recognized by the white hair fur on its head.
