A Sea of Plastic. It's not a pretty sight

A Sea of Plastic. It's not a pretty sight
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22, so The Sunday Challenge: PLASTIC, is very timely. Plastic pollution is poisoning our oceans and land, injuring marine life, and affecting our health!
In just about a minute I gathered together just a few small household items and put them in the kitchen sink in water to illustrate the problem, but if one looks around the home, in kitchen and bathroom cupboards and many more places, then the problem is really huge.
We are avid re-cyclers, but it's just not enough. Everyone has to be more pro-active.

Really like this image! Not the issue of course. We are avid recyclers too and there is a move not to use plastic pots so we are doing our best.

Very good work, we all have to start at home but most importantly changes have also to come from the top.

A well created image, Amelia. I fully agree about the need for society to do more than just "recycle".

If the country was serious about recycling there would be a national scheme not left to local councils to decide what they recycle. Regarding rubbish strewn every where the average Britain is to idle to walk to a litter bin, look at the state of a train after a two hour journey, when you open your mouth as I am prone to do no one will support you they look like it's that's in the wrong

Every single item that is manufactured weather it be metal, plastic, liquid, fabric, wood or concrete will eventually be returned to the land, It is how we go about it that's not working.

Great representation of the problem ... it was rather terrifying to see a documentary on the plastic islands drifting in our sea and oceans. More efforts/steps need to be taken by the countries and that it must be supported at the top by the governments.

And what ends up in the sea, stays in the sea. I remember seeing loads of rubbish when I used to dive.

What a mess. We find trash even in the most remote areas of the back country.

Makes me wonder just what we have to do to scare people into doing more.

Sadly.. many dont give a stuff.

We live in the middle of nowhere.. we still collect all our recycle and take it nearly one hour away once a week to a tow that is trying.. one of few in Oklahoma that IS trying.

Recycling is a start, reusable shopping bags also. Packaging in the supermarkets should be high on the agenda

Our council has good recycling but it's not the answer. I have just e-mailed my supermarket to ask them is they have a plastics policy and if they could rethink their use of it. I have to shop online now and although I specify no plastic bags things are delivered with far too much plastic wrapping. It's so difficult to avoid although I try. And I sign petitions about plastic straws, crisp bags etc. 38 degrees has had several recently.

nicely illustrates the problem, so much stuff comes in plastic these days, I guess someone needs to discover a biodegradable plastic . . .
